2016 may be remembered as the year of the political surprise for the people and things that came and went; Brexit, Nigel Farage, David Cameron, Donald Trump, Matteo Renzi and here in Australia the rise of minor parties.
But is it the whiteness of the media, as reported in today’s New York Times, part of the reason for the media at least, being caught by surprise?
Is it the lack of diversity in media that’s responsible for not adequately reading the mood of the people?
NewsRadio’s Tracey Holmes put that question to (((Andrew Jakubowicz))), Professor of Sociology in the discipline of Social and Political Science at UTS.
He says journalists with diverse ethnic backgrounds could provide nuanced insights, views and perspectives beyond what he calls the white-only narrative of events within most Australian media organisations.
